PITTSBURGH — In a strategic move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to keep backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky on their roster until 2025.
This was announced by Steelers General Manager Omar Khan on the Pat McAfee Show, indicating a two-year extension to Trubisky’s contract, a decision to alleviate the team’s cap burden for the 2023 season.
During his conversation on the Pat McAfee Show, Khan expressed satisfaction with the Steelers’ current lineup of quarterbacks.
“We’re in the final stages of extending Mitch Trubisky’s contract,” he said. “We believe in the strength of our quarterback room. Obviously, Kenny Pickett is our go-to guy and we have immense faith in Mitch Trubisky’s abilities in his current role. With the addition of Mason Rudolph, we’re quite thrilled about our quarterback lineup”.

While the specifics of the extension remain under wraps, it’s worth noting that Trubisky inked a two-year contract with the Steelers in last year’s free agency.
Trubisky had his boots on the ground as the Steelers’ starting quarterback at the outset of the 2022 season, serving as a mentor for rookie Kenny Pickett. But the season didn’t exactly unfold as Trubisky might have envisioned. His time under center was limited to seven games, during which he passed for 1,252 yards, recording four touchdowns and five interceptions. Despite these numbers, Trubisky managed to distinguish himself by scoring two touchdowns rushing, proving his worth as a solid backup option for the Steelers.
The dawn of the 2023 season sees Pickett stepping up as the undisputed starter. His performance as a rookie last season was impressive, throwing for 2,404 yards, with seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. Pickett’s dual-threat potential was evident as he carried the ball 55 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns.
The Steelers’ move to extend Trubisky’s contract underscores their approach to maintaining a dynamic and experienced quarterback room. With the promising Pickett and experienced Trubisky working together, the Steelers have a solid foundation to build their future on.
